…. quite the movie to be seen this Easter Holidays.
Exactly a month after the release of Coming 2 America, I bring an honest review of this sequel to the original Coming to America.
This is a movie that I highly anticipated right from the day the very first announcement was made. Why? I was a huge fan of Eddie Murphy growing up.

But then, I didn’t rush to watch it, despite the release date of the movie being March 4th 2021, exactly a month ago, I didn’t have the time to watch it. But I knew I would.
Many were excited to see the Coming to America cast reappearing on their TV screens after over 40 years, it really gave this nostalgic feeling. Now onto the review:
A nice remake
It was quite a nice movie, that reminded us of what Eddie Murphy was in his hey days; and it is a movie that created that black palatial feeling, since Black Panther.
Though, it didn’t live up to the hype!
Coming 2 America Cast
A huge work was put for Coming 2 America cast. Quite an ensemble of stars, that some of it seemed unnecessary. Aside the fact that most of the stars from the first movie — Coming to America was reused, it had quite an amount of stars, perhaps, for marketing purposes.
From Rick Ross, to Morgan Freeman, to Salt n Pepa, to Wesley Snipes, to En – Vogue and even former basketball player Dikembe Muotombo.
Key absentees were Paul Bates and Samuel L. Jackson and also Prince Akeem’s mom who died in
Quite the fashion show
One interesting thing about Coming 2 America is the fashion show in it. Ruth E. Carter in 2019 won an Oscar for creating the fashion of Wakanda, and she was also recruited for the same fashion statement on this one.
I can still remember when the young prince, Lavelle Junson, swapped his American style of clothing for the Zamundan style. It was a sight to behold.

Coming 2 America budget was 60 million USD, and what more to expect than gracing our screen with such sweet fashion statements.
The love story was unnatural
From the description of the movie as romance/rom-com. One would expect huge romance in it, but the love story seemed so unnatural.
How come Lavelle had no lover from Queens, New York? Also, when Prince Lavelle met General Izzi’s daughter, it happened to be love at first sight, so what then happened?
More so, there wasn’t much screen time for Lavelle and Mirembe — the royal groomer, on the third time of them appearing, a kiss has happened, and it seemed a magic was brewing. How did it happen?
Blame it on the screen time or on the charm of the acts, Lavelle and Mirembe didn’t give the shine that Prince Akeem and Lisa gave in the first movie — Coming to America.
Prince Lavelle’s mom — Mary, quite a character
When you hear that Coming 2 America is about to be announced, you’d expect a huge load of comedy. But it was not to be so, at least not from the people you’d expect.

The only character that brought about some level of comedy in the movie was Leslie Jones, who played the role of Mary Junson, Lavelle’s mom — the whore of Prince Akeem in his heydays.
Though her character and family reeks of Tyler Perry’s Madea movies, which purpose is not far fetched, since it was shot at Tyler Perry’s studios.
Feminism that wasn’t obvious
Creating a setting of family that had only females as children in a kingdom that favoured only a male heir, was typical of West African culture, but it was not made obvious.
The ‘bromance’ between Prince Lavelle and Princess Meeka Joffer, came too quick. It didn’t happen naturally. How will you just love someone you loathed so quickly.

Then again, the long awaited scene where Princess Meeka and her sisters were involved in a brawl with General Izzi was sandwiched too much with the scene of her brother.
Davido’s cameo in the movie — A plus
Nigerian singer and musical artiste, Davido was featured as a performer in the marriage ceremony of Prince Lavelle and Mirembe, courtesy of Sony Entertainment.
The inclusion of the afro beat star was a plus to the movie, as he is a citizen of Africa’s most populous nation — Nigeria, thereby increasing the appeal of the movie to not just Nigerians, but also Africans.
Meanwhile, for those wondering if coming 2 America is on Netflix, it is not, and nay never be, as broadcasting rights were sold to Amazon.
P.S.: While I apologize for my long time AWOL, which I’d explain later; I’d want you to get involved too. If you noticed any review that should have been on here, that I missed, do well to chip it in the comment section,
